    Viewtek Wireless Stereo Headset 2.4GHZ
    21 February 2016
    Best Wireless Headphones Out There
Since I saw a lot of bad reviews for this, I decided to write one myself. The manufacturer is advertised Viewtek or Niko but both use the same model, 2400RF. It's a digitally modulated wireless headset that uses the 2.4GHz ISM band. You can choose any of the 14 channels within the ISM band which may come in handy to deconflict it with your wireless router. Because it's digitally modulated (FSK), it significantly outperforms analog modulated wireless headsets. It punches through walls just as easy as your router does, probably better since its output power is advertised as 9dBm. I measured its output against my router and it was about 10dB stronger. So you'll want to put your router on one end of the ISM band and the headset on the other end. The only downside is these haven't been manufactured for some time so if you find one, while it may be advertised as new it's really new old stock (NOS) so don't be surprised if the battery in the headset is dead. Even if you provide external power to the headset, a dead battery may cause it to not work anyway. Both the headset and base unit operate off a +5VDC/450mA power adapter with a less common 3.5mm/1.35mm male barrel connector, center positive. An option to paying more for the odd connector size, +5VDC power supplies with the standard 5.5mm/2.1mm male barrel connector are cheap as well as adapters that convert the connector to 3.5mm/1.35mm male barrel connector are widely available. The adapter to buy is a 5.5mm/2.1mm-female to 3.5mm/1.35mm-male. The battery is a lithium-ion polymer (aka LiPo) 3.7V single-cell 550mAH battery with dimensions 40mm x 30mm x ~5-6mm. Note, this is different chemistry than the more common lithium-ion batteries. Make sure you see the word 'polymer' when you shop and make sure the battery has a built-in Protection Circuit Board/Module (PCB/PCM). The batteries are not hard to find but removing it is not simply unplugging it. You have to desolder and/or cut the wires to remove the old one and solder and/or splice the new one in. Not hard at all if you have some soldering skills. Be careful to not pinch any wires when putting it back together. Given its exceptional performance, a little disassembly and soldering is a small price to pay to keep it working for years to come. Batteries will degrade over time, all batteries do. The battery is in the left earpiece (note: power goes into the right earpiece which is where I erroneously started to look). Just peel off the ear pad, remove four small screws to get the cap off to get to the battery. A new fully charged battery lasts ~2 hours which covers most movies. Headset is comfortable with nice cushy pads but my ears usually need a break after a couple hours. It has volume control and be aware when turned on or reset it's at its loudest which can be pretty loud. The buttons on each earpiece can be a little squishy but none have failed so far in my 4-5 years of use. I just bought another one here on eBay for ~$20 shipped (battery was indeed dead) but have also found them at local swap meets for $10.

MacBook Air is as good as it gets. Got a huge deal on eBay.
Bought my wife one for Christmas last year. I typically use a PC. Unfortunately not all programs are written for the Mac so I installed Boot Camp and Windows-7 Ultimate which runs very well. So I'm hooked now. I'm trading my PC laptop in for a MacBook Air and will learn the Mac side of things. The MacBook Air is fast and with an Intel CPU runs Windows native extrememly well. Apple even creates a driver disk so you can use the touchpad features on the Windows side. I upgraded to Lion then learned how to create an install disk then fresh installed Lion. The ability to port over applications (and of course data) from a backup of an earlier OS version (Snow Leopard) is outstanding. Never saw that on a PC.

NetGear RP614 an overall good router, inexpensive, a great value
The NetGear RP614 router has become extremely cheap, you can find them for under $15 shipped, and performs most operations people use while offering advanced features for network professionals or DIYers. This model does not have wireless. Extra routers are excellent for providing additional security with expansion capability. NetGear products have always been reliable, easy to use, and easy to upgrade. Highly recommend.
