The Best of the Modern Disney Animated Classics
As a child I, like many others, grew up watching Disney cartoon features such as Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Pinocchio, etc. The 80's were a drought in solid feature films from Disney as films like The Fox and the Hound left something to be desired... they just weren't the magical quality we expected from Disney. This all changed with 1989's The Little Mermaid which kicked off Disney's second renaissance in theatrical animation that lasted (arguably) through 1999's Tarzan when Disney's dabbling in 3D caused their 2D films to suffer in overall quality. Of the 10-year stint, the Lion King stands out to me as the best film. It really has something for everyone - a story of family, courage, adventure, friendship, and taking responsibility for your actions. There is no shortage of good lessons that your child can learn from this movie, and to say it is entertaining is undermining just how incredible the film really is. The Lion King features great voice talent, outstanding character development, fantastic artistic vision, and a story that will drive your emotions from laughter to sorrow and back to triumph. In my opinion only The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, and Beauty & The Beast come close in their overall presentation. You can't do much better than The Lion King when it comes to family films. I wholeheartedly recommend it for any family with children of any age.

A look behind the scenes of genius
To be clear, I am writing this from the point of view of a very big MJ fan. This Is It is what I was expecting. A glimpse into the rehearsal life of Michael Jackson. But that's just what's so brilliant about it. Never have I had the opportunity to see what he's like behind the scenes. What I didn't expect was the production value of the DVD. Even though it's just rehersal footage, the producers did their best to give us a view into what the concert series in London would have looked like. Everything from a brand new 3D film for Thriller, to a black and white green screen effort on Smooth Criminal. I can easily say this would have been the most expesive and most entertaining concert of all time, had The King of Pop not tragically died so young. I think this DVD has a fairly broad appeal. Of course the die-hard MJ fan can't live without it. But people who love music, dance, pyrotechnics, or all of the above could certainly learn a few things from watching Michael direct this show. My only complaints would be the lack of footage for Billie Jean and the opening of the concert. They spend a great deal of time teasing what both will be like, but they never come right out and say what the Billie Jean number will look like, nor do they ever show the props for Gotta' Be Startin' Somethin'. Still, these omissions are understandable, as Michael's death canceled the show, and likewise some of these props may have never been completed or tested. Also, during scenes that had significant films on the back screen, I would have preferred a picture-in-picture camera, as to enjoy the full experience, rather than cutting back and forth. All-in-all, this is Michael's best DVD, and a perfect way to enjoy and experience his music and mastermind in one final show. Love is forever.

The Versus Series is Back with a Bang!
Fans of Marvel vs. Capcom and Capcom vs. SNK will probably pick up Capcom's latest endeavor - Tatsunoko vs. Capcom. I want to quickly point out, to the Marvel vs. crowd especially, the difference with this game. First off, you can only have 2 playable characters, and there is NO third support character. Secondly, the control scheme is highly simplified. I'm not sore if this was done for the Wii audience, or if they just thought it would be a good idea. In any case, the game shines in stunning 3D, even on the Wii platform. I'm a little disappointed that Capcom chose to cross over with a relatively unknown anime publisher outside of Japan (knowing they would release the game to a global audience). The few recognizable characters I have seen on the Tatsunoko roster include the heroes and villains from Gatchman (known as G-Force: Guardians of Space in the US [not to be confused with that stupid hamster movie]). Of course, the Capcom side is loaded with fan favorites such as Ryu, Morrigan, Chun Li, Megaman, Viewtiful Joe, Frank West from Dead Rising (US Version Exclusive). I thought it was a very interesting choice on Capcom's part to release the game exclusively on the Wii, but it's a minor complaint considering how well it plays on the Classic Controller. You can also buy a Hori-brand Wii fighting stick which I highly recommend for the avid fighting gamer. Overall I think the game delivers on so many levels. Graphically it's outstanding for a 2D-fighter (rendered in 3D), especially on the Wii (the weakest console platform). It's fun, there's a ton of characters, and the presentation is top-notch.
