    The best classic series Doctor?
I wasn't sure what to make of this when it first aired as it seemed to have just as many bad points as good. On re-watching it recently I warmed to it significantly and happily give it 4/5 Good points: The Doctor. Paul McGann is easily the best actor to fill the role up to that point for me. He injected dynamism, intelligence, bravery and humour into the role. The sets. This was where the TARDIS went retro-futuristic and NOT with the beginning of the 2005 series. Gone were the shaky walls, the naff SFX and cardboard villains and in came good construction, dynamic perfomances and high production values. The assistants. Daphne Ashbrook does a creditable job as the reluctant assistant Dr. Grace Holloway and Yee Jee Tso handles the tricky role of Chang Lee with ease. Bad points: The script. It's not that it was awful, it just didn't quite hit the mark. It was made for an American audience and one point that has impeded US acceptance of the Doctor is motive. Why does he spend so much time defending Earth when he can go to any time and any place? I feel that this was why the setting was Earth in the near future and the feel of the story is of an introduction to a planned series that never materialised. The Master would have been a better choice of villain for a more established series but as the US hadn't become as acquainted with the Who concept as the UK, I can see why it was all a bit baffling. That said the script did have good points. I personally had no qualms with "the kiss" (actually the first time there had ever been a hint of romance between the Doctor and an assistant). I think that the look and content of The Movie had a great influence on the 2005 series in terms of production and theme, and it is often wrongfully overlooked. It's such a shame it was never picked up and we got the chance to see what McGann could have done with a Who TV series, although he became prolific with the Big Finish audio adventures.

    Dr Who -Earthshock
If you were a fan of Dr Who in the 80's, then you'll probably remember Earthshock as being one of Peter Davison's best stories. The opening episode gives a very tense build up to the introduction of the Cybermen and in a way it's a shame that the cover of the DVD gives the game away as the BBC at the time went to great lengths to keep the fact that the Cyberman were back a secret. The pace of the story is good from beginning to end. Yes, the effects and sets look dated now, but this was Dr Who in the 80's and to be fair I think a lot of the series' budget was put into this story. The Cybermen costumes particularly were a cut above previous versions and the regular cast put in good performances. Beryl Reid. Hmmm... I have no problem with Beryl per se, but I do think she was miscast as a starship captain as there were many other actresses of equal stature capable of pulling off the role better. As the story progresses, it really does show off the talent of the scripting as one was never certain of the safety of the Earth, nor any of the characters and the body count reflects this. The twist at the end was both unexpected and handled extremely well, but it had been obvious for some time that the TARDIS was becoming crowded and one companion really had to leave. The lack of a closing theme, while seeming cheesey, was probably the only option left open to the producer. I hadn't seem this for many years when I bought it and I certainly wasn't disappointed.
