Better than Pretenders 1
In Pretenders II the raw nature of the band is still there, and the songs are good, on the whole. A couple of forgotten gems - 'The English Rose' and 'Birds of Paradise'. A crisp sound, not overproduced. Better than the later stuff.

Not one of her greatest, but still worth a try
I've known Joan Armatrading's music since the early eighties, mostly through the medium of the cassette. I've renewed most of the titles, mainly through eBay, and now have my collection on CD. But somehow I never got round to getting 'Lover's Speak', possibly because it had poor reviews when it was issued. Or maybe just because. Anyway, it's a poor album on first listening, and second and third, but it does get better. Initially the tracks seem rather samey, with little variation in production, but as you get to know them they grow. In general, though, it's rather lightweight, with no standout tracks and a couple of real shockers. But then that's not bad out of fourteen. Give it a try, if you are an Armatrading fan.

Real live
As usual with Dylan there is good and bad as well as old and new. It's an album which came out in the mid eighties, shortly after the recording of the Infidels album. The two tracks from that are good (Licence to kill & I and I). Most of the other tracks are accessible versions of favourites, where the delivery is different from the regular studio versions but not so far removed as to make the song unrecognisable as sometimes happens with Dylan's live stuff. The standout track is Tangled up in Blue. The studio version of this track is great, but the version on Real Live has more meat to it and an almost completely different set of lyrics. Worth buying perhaps for just this one track alone, though, as I said the rest is pretty reasonable, too.
