The dangers of smoking in bed - Mariana Enriquez

A compelling piece of prose
I wanted to read this book from the first time I saw it in a bookshop. Yes, I judged a book by it's cover. It didn't let me down. This is a truly compelling book with some really really well written prose. There are sub texts that are specific to Argentina, but are also universal to all humans. Like a Simpsons episode, even if you don't read the stories with that lens they are still fantastic stories that you can take at face value. Enriquez has a beautiful knack for pulling the rug out from under you in multiple places in her stories, not just at the end like most horror books do, and she does this with great skill. The translation is sublime and not at any point did I feel like I was reading a book that wasn't written in English originally. If you love this book another one to try is Angela Carter's Bloody Chamber. Or, of course, if you liked the Bloody Chamber then you will likely like this book too.
