Purrr, it's Betty Boo
Rarely does the title and cover picture of an album tell us what to expect as well as this one does. Grr - and Betty Boo as a semi-tiger. Betty Boo was a tiger and I hope that - whatever she's doing now - she still is. She had attitude, she had claws. Also, on a feline connection, I once read that people either like cats very much or they do not like them at all. I suspect that the same applies to Betty Boo. Betty Boo's music fused rap and pop - to produce something with a harder edge that the generality pop, and with greater musical variety and depth than pure rap. Her hits are not on this album - for those who know her from Where Are You Baby and Doin' The Do, every track may well be unfamiliar. But every track is a gem. I bought the album because I love Betty Boo's music and I love her attitude. I was not disappointed. In my view, this is essential listening.

All Power to the Girls
When I placed my bid on this album, I had heard only one song from Shampoo - Trouble. In fact, Trouble - included on several compilations - is probably the only Shampoo track to be found in shops devoted to new records. It has long been amongst my favourite recordings. So much so that a search for Shampoo CDs was high on my list of Ebay priorities. I was delighted to find an entire album of their songs. When it arrived, I hesitated to play the record. What if Trouble was Shampoo's only song worth a listen? I needn't have worried - this is a great album without an inferior track. It is a mystery that the girls' albums (there is another) have been deleted and have remained unavailable... What is more, this is where Girl Power began - it was Shampoo (not The Spice Girls) who coined the phrase. This album does not include the still well known Trouble - but it is a monument and a classic.

Worth hearing more than one time
Britney Spears has had a distinctly uneven career. But this, her debut single, still sounds fresh. It's a remarkably good song, and Ms Spears did it justice. Listening to it, it's hard not to think of the images from the video - which may affect the listener's enjoyment one way or the other. (I've heard very harsh things said of the video.) Be that as it may, the video is not included on this three track single. Track one is the radio version - the definitive version of the song. Track two is an instrumental - I think it's exactly the same as track one, but without Ms Spears' voice. (Both tracks one and two have same playing time - 3 minutes 30 seconds.) Track three is another song - "Autumn Goodbye" - with a Britney Spears vocal. The lyric says "I never promised you a happy ending/ You never said you wouldn't make me cry..." - which makes me (at least) think of the some of the things that have since befallen Britney Spears. On that basis, it leaves me feeling rather sad. It's a good enough song, in its own right, but not as good as "Baby One More Time". Then again, I don't expect the B side song to be as good as the A side one - and B sides are often a lot less worthwhile than this. Overall - worth buying both as a slice of pop history, and as record in its own right. Play it - it's probably better than you think it is.
