Empires At War: A Short History of Modern Asia Since World War II by Francis Pik
03 September 2020
Excellent overview of modern Asian history for the general reader
Francis Pike has the ability to absorb a lot of information and succinctly write readable overviews of the various countries in Asia. These are not just summaries of literature, but display acute intellectual judgement based on his knowledge and experience. A novel and interesting approach was the discussion of America at the start of the book, putting America's activities in Asia as the natural result of its expansion towards the west from the American east coast. The book's basic intellectual approach is refreshing - no postmodern nonsense, but an appreciation of the importance of liberal capitalism and the liberal democratic order for Asia's development. However he is not blind to the West's mistakes and shortcomings. Empires at War is a superb overview of the history of Asia post-World War II, ideal for the general reader who wants to learn about the region. Specialists may also find his intellectual conclusions stimulating.
