Rollercoaster of a ride
I originally bought this film for the music, but found myself swept along by the story. It is a film of contrasts, and emotions run high, making this a rollercoaster of a ride.
Set amongst the power struggle between Spain and Portugal in the 18th century, it tells of two men from vastly different backgrounds: Father Gabriel (Jeremy Irons)a gentle, peace-loving Jesuit priest, and Rodrigo Mendoza (Robert de Niro) a mercenary who converts to Christianity after he kills his brother in a duel - helping the same people he used to kidnap.
Having gained the trust of the Guarani Indians, they build a mission high above the Iguazu falls as a place of sanctuary and learning.
The spectacular scenery and remarkable score make a sharp contrast to the savagery with which the Guaranis are treated.
Is Cardinal Altamirano truly concerned with the future of the Jesuits, or is he looking after himself? You decide.

If you like magic, you'll love this
The film takes an old legend and breathes new life into it, telling the story from Merlin’s perspective. Although he was created with pagan magic, he lives in a world that is slowly turning to Christianity. The evil Queen Mab, superbly played by Miranda Richardson, desperately tries to turn people back to the old ways before she is forgotten. Merlin on the other hand, played passionately by Sam Neill, does his best to guide people in the right direction and find a good king for England. Martin Short deserves a mention for his dramatic portrayal as Mab’s sidekick Frick.
The cast is excellent, the scenery is beautiful, the music is superb, and the special effects work well in this context. When you consider that this was made for television and not the big screen, this is a brilliant production.

The definitive collection
If you had to choose one album from Vangelis to get an overview of his work, this is the album to buy. While some of the tracks sound a little dated now, considering how keyboards have progressed in recent years, the album is worth buying just for 'Conquest of Paradise'.
