This is hands down one of my favorite books regarding photography technique
I know this book from when I used it back in high school. As a tool for understanding techniques and image processes I've found it to be second to none. It has very detailed illustrations and precise notes on how to obtain desired effects as well as instructions on creating a personal darkroom and how to get started using a camera. Many of the concepts are easily applied to digital and are useful for more than just film.
