Excellent medium
Apoxie Sculpt is a two-part modeling medium that handles like clay but is a bit less malleable. When first mixed, it is soft; as you continue to work with it, it becomes firmer and holds detail well. It is best to work in layers, allowing sevetal hours between sessions.
It is a fairly expensive medium, but worth it because no firing or casting is needed. It is excellent for sculpting, model customization and repair/restoration.
The only negative is the necessity of wearing nitrile gloves. This does reduce the "feel" when working, but uncured Apoxie Sculpt is irritating to the skin.

Amazing resource for sculptors
This is an outstanding reference book for anyone interested in sculpting in clay. There is invaluable information on materials and tools (including safety tips) and just-detailed-enough illustrations of anatomy. Several projects are shown from armature to finished figure. The figures featured are fantasy characters, but the techniques shown are valuable for any figural work.
