The greatest silent epic of all time
Abel Gance’s NAPOLEON was originally going to be the first of six films about the French emperor, but this 5 1/2 hour version used up all his funds (it’s still missing one scene, but not a critical one that can’t be explained with an intertitle). A triumph of silent cinema, with a new score by Carl Davis, this Blu-ray is the best reason yet to buy a region-free Blu-ray player, since rights issues having to do with the score prevent it from being released in the U.S. (Carmine Coppola produces a score for an earlier restoration of the film in America, but passed away before this version — with additional footage — was released).
Employing every camera trick in the book, along with a modern, non melodramatic form of acting, this film is more imaginative and fun than any Hollywood blockbuster even was. Heck, it’s more imaginative and fun than most films ever made. The only caveat is that you really need a big screen to appreciate its scale, particularly the tryptich at the end, which is the first appearance of widescreen, though created using three cameras instead of one.
The story covers Napoleon’s early years, from his childhood through the Italian campaigns (which post-date the Reign of Terror but predate his rule of France). The movie is enhanced by knowledge of French history during the time, but isn’t required. Besides the movie on three Blu-rays and some special features (including an interview with Carl Davis on writing the score), the film also comes with an excellent booklet, with an essay about the film and one from Kevin Brownlow (who restores it) on coming into contact with the film (though in a highly-abridged form) for the first time.
A must-own.

LATE SPRING and THE ONLY SON are two of ...
LATE SPRING and THE ONLY SON are two of Ozu's greatest films. Unfortunately, THE ONLY SON has a lot of tape hiss (like a wind tunnel) occurring through much of its runtime, though you can still hear the voices. It also has scratches, mold damage, and doesn't look that sharp. LATE SPRING is much better, but doesn't utilize the new 4K scan that Shokichu did (after its release), and has scratches. A good booklet accompanies both films.

The Original
Didn't like Episodes I-III (okay, so III was pretty good)? Looking for Episodes IV-VI in which Han shoots first, Jabba doesn't show up until the third movie, and Ewoks don't blink? Unless you care for an awesome box or loads of extra features, these are the versions you're looking for.
