Picture Clarity is Poor

I bought this unit to replace a 12 year old one that finally broke. The old one recorded and played great DVD's, but this new one only records at 480i or 480p. In this new digital world, 1080i or 1080p HDMI is preferred. My wife is satisfied with the unit, so I guess I will quit complaining.
