Second hand CPU
As with all things second hand, you never know if it will be any good. Unfortunately the same applies to new goods as well. The logic behind my purchase was that if the part came from a PC dismantling firm and was taken from a known working PC then there can't be much wrong with it. When it arrived I installed it into the PC and ran a series of free benchmark and stress tests on it to make sure it would run without fault at normal to high temperatures, which it did. The CPU is a fairly old model and it can only do what it was designed to do and it does it very well. With all that aside there is not really much to tell. I would though always advise anyone buying PC components to thoroughly test to the best of their capabilities whatever they purchase. There are a lot of freeware and GPL products available online that will test CPUs and other components, it's just a matter of looking for them, reading the instructions and using them.

Consumer device that cannot be easily reset to factory state after failure.
I bought this as a refurb without warranty and took my chances. For 3 weeks it was an excellent device used mainly for web browsing and as a network scanner. One day the device refused to start up past a logo saying Android, re-starting and using the reset button didn't help. After dismantling (I am also a PC technician) I found the buttons that are needed to be pressed in combination to access the "android system recovery 3e" screen but that screen is frozen and neither up or down menu work, nor the enter button so the device cannot be reset to factory and the cache cannot be cleared. If it had an internal removable SD card it would be an excellent device but so far a remedy eludes me. Will keep trying to fix it when I have time but for now it seems to be a disposable item which from a professional point of view is not worth fixing. Update: 6 weeks after purchase worked out how to reset the device, internal buttons and external keyboard must be accessible in order to perform factory reset, extremely inconvenient and beyond what most people may be comfortable with.
