Tecsun PL880 PLL Dual Conversion AM FM Shortwave Portable Radio with SSB - Black
18 May 2021
Detailed HAM/Amateur Radio Review of PL-880, Best Small Portable SW Radio IMO!
MANY outstanding reviews which are welldeserved! I have had this model for a year and bought another for my best friend/Electronics hobbyist. I have been a ham since 1969 and have dozens of radios and transceivers. Bottom line is this is the BEST EVER HF SSB/AM/CW mode portable I have experienced. I put it on an outside 40m Ham Band antenna, with an antenna switch to my restored Kenwood R599, modified audio Ham ONLY receiver. Only the slightest better sound and less noise on the Kenwood, on SSB signals from Europe. I modified a LONG 5.5ft slip-on whip antenna by drilling out it's base to 8mm, and even better when portable, but get outside for less RF hash! Now for the few Quibbles I can report as an RF Engineer: Worst problem on SSB especially is CHOPPY DSP AGC, with two artifacts. Firstly, the initial overload crash on each syllable or morse code character overshoots, then quickly settles down. Second, on no or weak signals reception, it seems like the Digital (DSP?) AGC "hunts" by changing gain ranges abruptly, AND this is verified by up to 10dBuV signal strength variations. Go find the excellent AUGUST 2014 ARRL QST Lab Review, it was excellent but said the dBuV and SN Ratio metering was off significantly, but great for relative measurements. Mine goes from 14 no signal, to at most 65 reading, for almost 1000uV input as shown on my HP8591E RF Spectrum Analyzer. Final Quibble is that the Shortwave frequency accuracy seems to vary by 0,15kHz, over days and temperature after recalibration (two keys sequence is given in the hidden modes tips on line). I never evaluated the AM Sync Detector yet, but listen to 3.885 and 7.290MHz "AM WINDOW" regional hams that like to discuss AM and Military Transmitter stuff "Old Buzzard" (long winded) style. Final Quibble concerning physical quality, It has been knocked down and hit the hard floor or street maybe 19 times. Barely a scratch or marks on the radio, BUT the battery door and heavy rechargeable battery pops off/out without damage. I bought 4 larger mAh spare, with a dual 18650 charger. The tilt panel on the back was however quickly broken, and not a great angle. Solution is to tighten the Antenna screw, and flip it back, un-extended behind the radio to tilt it. Thats All Folks, Hilary W4HDL.
Motorola MFE131 Dual Gate Mosfet - NOS TO-72 package *GENUINE* QTY 2

These are a cool Dual Gate MOSFET, I remember from the '70-80's,great for FM VHF and HF
These are a cool Dual Gate MOSFET, I remember from the '70-80's,great for FM VHF and HF Ham Radio preamps and an alternate to 40673 (substitute NTE Electronics NTE222 @$7-11 ea!) , my favorite, but long obsolete tansistor. Heathkit and everybody else stateside used them in Ham receivers and VFO's arf amp and Mixer functions. A veru good seller, and I reordered from him multiple types of classic parts! I used a cut up machine tool pin IC socket to modify my Kenwood R-599 Ham Receiver RF Preamp (Hitachi 3SK22GR) stage to try many kinds of DG FETs there, and put in trim pots for Bias and Source resistor to find the best gain/lowest noise parts!
Vintage Heathkit IB-5281 RLC Bridge - Resistance Capacitance Inductance Meter

A Wonderful Inexpensive line of Test Equipment for Ham or Electronics Experimenter!
This was the third model of the many inexpensive, 2 x 9V battery or battery eliminator powered Heathkit Test Equipment from the 70-80's, which I (W4HDL) purchased from Hamfest and Ebay sources. These were modular, stackable kits of innovative all solid state design, with excellent manuals still available from a website from Italy. I already snagged the RF and Audio Signal Generators, and wanted this RLC Bridge very much, as it has a classical true sine wave oscillator, as different from the many cheap Digital meters that allegedly use Ramp waveforms for measurement. The benefit is less loading and higher Q factor in operation. I read that in a reviewer's comment, I am restoring all 3 and looking out for the FET Multimeter and Signal Tracer but none in clean condition. This item is in near perfect condition, except for the white lithium grease almost cemented the RANGE switch, over 45 years it hardened. I cut a few wires, loosened the front panel, and disassembled it by removing the 2 long screws nut and many spacers! A day in the sun in a cup of rubbing alcohol, followed by Deoxit cleaner and light oil COMPLETELY freed the shaft and bushing. Photo below showing disassembly and switch repaired. Now need to clean the tarnished contacts better, Deoxit helped so far not shiny. Now I may have overpriced the market with this glowing review!!!
