I had never played the series prior to this. When it comes to early Fighters in video game generations, they don’t exactly age as well as nostalgia would have us believe. This, however, is almost nothing but fantastic. There is a mechanic where you jump into the background(where you can stay and fight), or jump back into the foreground, and continue the beat down there. It almost becomes a side step mechanic, and when it’s in full force, the action gets really really great. There are lots of special moves, and the normal attacks are extremely responsive. The characters are diverse and interesting all with different feeling strengths and move sets. It runs great as well. No slow down and choppy animations. This is easily one of the best fighters of the generation, and if I was making a list, this would be number one. If you have never played the series, this is a wonderful place to start!

Dare I say... better than NBA Jam?
This game is HIGH quality. Midway sports from this era was something special anyway, but this game in particular has a little extra something. Aside from being 2 player; which is a great addition, the single player never gets old. The checking makes sense on a sports level in hockey, and having the goalie makes scoring more compelling than in NBA Jam. You might catch fire, and burn the net down while getting unlimited turbo. All the players have stats, and it’s got all the NHL teams of the era. To me, it’s NBA Jam in a setting that makes more sense, and in a sport that makes every steal, break away, and goal count. If you haven’t played it, PLAY THIS GAME.
