Read this and you'll be hooked on building handplanes
I have recently begun replacing my Bailey bench planes with wooden planes. This is part of moving to an all hand-tool shop.
1. it's quiet.
2. my shop is small and it's a better use of space.
3. Hand tools are cool and can be more accurate than machines.
4. wooden planes are actually easier to adjust and set up.
5. Using these tools actually increase one's skill.
If one forsakes using machines then a different mix of hand planes is needed. I'll need a foreplane and a panel plane. They aren't readily available so I need to make them. A wonderful guide to own is Scott Wynn's Traditional Handplanes. But Cecil E. Pierce in his Fifty Years a Planemaker and User really takes us along with him as he builds a Jack plane and gives us confidence that we can actually undertake the effort. Best of all his prose is enjoyable.
