    INNOVA 3320 Auto-Ranging Digital Multimeter
    13 October 2016
    Best Cheap Multimeters
I own and use several multimeters, from a 5-1/2 digit Fluke bench meter, two Fluke handheld meters (including the 87-V) and several other meters (both digital and analog), down to low end pocket meters thrown in the glove box of a car or kept in a toolbox or a utility drawer. IMO, the Innova 3320 is the best inexpensive DMM I've seen. It is ruggedly built, has a decent sized LCD display, and is reasonably attractive (although that's a question of personal taste). The included probes are of surprisingly good quality, clearly made of silicone or silicone-like insulation over flexible stranded wire. The probe tips aren't the sharpest I've ever seen, but then again this probably won't be the meter you're using when you try to pierce the layer of oxidation on an old circuit board trace. And the probes connect to the meter using standard 4mm sheathed banana plugs. (Many meters in this price range have poor quality probes permanently attached.) This means you can use different probes if you wish, or if the included probes are ever lost or damaged. A key plus feature--and the reason I got one of these--is the battery testing modes separated from the normal DC voltage mode. Simply measuring voltage across the terminals does not give a true picture of the remaining energy. A much better indication is the voltage when the battery is under load. The Innova 3320's battery test mode does this. My only complaints are (a) the lack of a backlight for the LCD display, and (b) a very poor implementation of the continuity mode. The former is typical of low end meters and can be excused. The latter, however, is not so easily forgiven. I would not necessarily expect a meter in this price class to have a fully latching continuity tone, but it does need to be sensitive and very fast. I had to apply significant pressure to trigger the tone, and even then there was a momentary delay. This inadequate sensitivity and noticeable latency renders the continuity mode virtually useless. Other than that, however, this is a very good and highly recommended low end meter. It easily as good as one costing 2 to 3 times as much at your local hardware store.
