Outdated Sound Effects But Fun
1 of 2 found this helpful This is a nice, fairly realistic model of the Norfolk and Western class J northern streamlined steam locomotive. It looks great hauling an N&W passenger consist such as the Hiawatha. It's a good puller and smokes nicely. The simulated steam discharge from its cylinders when it starts and stops is a nice effect as is the electronic sound of steam and chuffing sound synchronized with the drive rods.
But the electronic simulated steam whistle sounds phony in comparison to modern versions of this model steam engine which also include a bell sound, These newer versions produce a full throated steam whistle using an electronic sample of the actual engine -- not to mention remote control features available with Lionel's newer models.
But this version is still a lot of fun. If you want more realistic sound effects, you can purchase a railsounds box car and add it to the train, This does not detract from the realistic operating experience since passenger trains used to include box cars carrying milk because passenger lines were known for smooth rides which would not curdle the milk.
Buy this model and enjoy the ride.
