Ultimate Survival Emergency Camping Hiking Knife Shovel Axe Saw Gear Kit Tools
06 October 2016
Not aircraft quality, but workable if you can get it for a good price
My first impression upon opening my new purchase.... If you pay more then $4 or $5 (or as I did -$12) for this "Ultimate Survival Emergency Camping Hiking Knife Shovel Ax Saw Gear Kit", your likely to suffer from a bit of P.T.S.D. (post traumatic SUCKA disorder) upon arrival. "Ultimate".... Reeaaallllly? I thought it was a cool concept (which is why I bought it) for a pack-able, portable, multi tool and I still think it is, in concept. In actuality however, the realized product seems to be lacking the quality and finish I believe is needed to make it truly useful right out of the box in the real world of the average camper, much less so, in a survival scenario where this tool may be in high demand because its yours or your families (we are 6 people) ONLY shovel, ax, saw, or heaven forbid, knife. With that said however, I believe with a little DIY tenacity, all is not lost. But be prepared to pay for with your time what you did not pay for with your wallet. I'm out 12 bucks so I have convinced myself that I can and will "fix" it (with $200 - $300 worth of my time). I have not used this "Ultimate Survival Gear Kit" yet because I just received it today and, frankly neither the kit or I are ready. What you get in the kit, my opinion of it, and the fixes I'm planning to spend a fair bit of time on; 1. A fairly well designed sheath with 2 belt loops made as cheaply as could be (Lee Iacocca would be proud). Single stitching, thin material and a stiff snap = not long for this world. The Fix; before it falls apart reinforce all stitching, loosen / lube the snap or replace with quality hook and loop. 2. A small shovel attachment with a bottle opener on it. Thin but seems sturdy. Fits snugly on the business end of the handle. No fix needed (yet). 3. Ax attachment w/small nail pulling notch fits snugly on the business end of the handle. It appears to have a hollow grind but is so dull its only uses might be as digging assistant or to inflict blunt force trauma on a would be attacker, zombie, or evil clown. The fix; Sharpen the cutting edge and the nail pull notch. 4. A thin (1/16"), very dull 6" long drop point knife blade with a 4" hollow grind, a gut hook 1.5" back of the tip, and a bottle opener 3.5" back from the tip. There is about a 1/4" hole at the back of the tang as if to be used to hang the blade from a nail, peg, or string. Because the tang secures in the handle with a single spring button and the handle is so much larger then the tang, the blade swings like a pendulum from the handle with the tip flopping up and down about 2". The fix; Sharpen the 4" blade, drill a 1/4" hole through the handle to match the hole in the back of the tang and use a 1/4" cotterless hitch pin as a second fastener to stop the blade from moving so much. 5. A thin (1/16"), 6" long, 7 TPI pull saw blade. Reminds me of a sawzall blade. There is about a 1/4" hole at the back of the tang as if to be used to hang the blade from a nail, peg, or string. Same problem as the knife blade. Because the tang secures in the handle with a single spring button and the handle is so much larger then the tang, the blade swings like a pendulum from the handle with the tip flopping up and down about 2". The fix; Use the same hole drilled in the handle for the knife and the same cotterless hitch pin to secure the blade and limit its movement. 6. A 1" diameter very thin wall (less then 1/32) What appears to be stainless steel tube handle. Its light weight and feels strong due to being cylindrical but 1 bad swing of the ax could dent the handle against whatever your chopping causing the handle to fold like a beer can. The blades when attached to the handle flop up and down and when stored inside the handle, there is nothing but a little friction holding one of them in place. The Fix; cover the handle with a thin piece of pipe insulating foam to help absorb the impact of a bad swing. drill 2, 1/4" holes (1 at each end of the handle) and add a 1" long 1/4" diameter cotterless hitch pin to the kit. Use the cotterless hitch pin to secure the blade to the business end of the handle when in use. Use the cotterless hitch pin to secure the blade inside the handle when not in use. Suggestions; They should have some accessories for sale to expand the uses of this gadget, like kitchen tools for cooking. Spatula tongs, serving spoon, skewer, etc.

Mtech MT673 Neck Knife 2" Black Stonewashed Blade 5" Overall G-10
08 October 2016
IT'S VERY SMALL (how many times have you heard that before?) You'll hear it a lot more wearing this ;-)
Decent little knife for $9. But when I say little, I mean very little. Much smaller then I thought it would be. They need to put something in the picture to give people prospective, like a picture of the knife in the hand of an average size man. It really is baby size. The picture on my 15 inch laptop is actual size. The knife seems nice for what it is. The quality appears good. Dosen't come out of the box all that sharp. The kydex sheath is cool and the knife locks in with a positive snap, but it is a little lose fitting so it can rattle a bit. It comes on a ball chain that fits easily over my head but I wish it came with a belt clip as well. In the end, had I known just how small this guy is I wouldn't have bought it. Now that I have I'm going to try to enjoy. Maybe I can use it to start conversations with the ladies "it's so little" "ahhh, how cute"!

Soft Store Pet Dry Food Container 50 Pounds Vittles Vault Blue Nylon New
06 November 2016
Better then a 5 gallon bucket or keeping in the original bag
I'd been searching for a large, air tight storage container for dry dog food for a while. I narrowed it down based on reviews, research, and our needs, to 3 containers. This wasn't my first choice (based on value, normally about $40 each) but I found a great deal from a clearing house and got 2 Vittles Vault 50 lbs Soft Store Dry Food Containers for $10 each, $20 total, shipped to my door. The great price / value was the deciding factor for me. The quality seems decent, but we've only had them a couple weeks so time will tell. I mixed about 10 lbs of nutra-nuggets with a 40 lbs bag of Kirkland dog food and pored it into one of the containers, it all fit nicely. We like the way the bag collapses as the food level drops, keeping out excess air that might otherwise cause the food to go stale prematurely. Our dogs will eat stale food, but they clearly don't enjoy it as much as a fresh bag. We figured their dry food is their day to day staple so we should try to keep it fresh for them to enjoy as much as one possibly could enjoy eating the same food every day of ones life. I think these soft store containers should do the trick (as long as they hold up).
