The definitive history of the L.I.R.R. in text & photos
Photos such as I never thought existed--even one of the Cold Spring Harbor
station in the early 1900s. The authors write not only as railroad enthusiasts,
but railroad scholars as well--their syntax will excite English professors!
They even reveal why the Long Island Railroad was instrumental in wiping out
venemous snakes on the Island (it's true there are none--but why, no herpatology
book could ever explain to my satisfaction).
The book is worth five times what I paid for it...at least twice what I paid
for persons with only half the love I hold for this railroad and how important
it was to me as I was growing up on Long Island. I wish there were a second
volume covering the years 1965 to the present.

Contains one of the most compelling poems ever written
The Hound of Heaven is a strange name for a poem, but the strangeness disappears as one concentrates on
each magnificent line. This has to be the greatest religious poem ever written. Many more of Francis Thompson's work are included i.e. Poems on Children, Sister Songs, poems from Assumpta Maria.
The leather binding and decoration are a work of art also.
