Cornelius : CM: (Cornelius Remixes) CD (1999)
17 September 2019
Immersive, psychedelic, MASTERWORK
Never have I been so happy to be asked to review an album, especially after reading lukeworm reviews from other listeners. I have no experience reviewing, so this might be more of a rant.. but please understand: Music is my favorite part of life, I have almost zero interest in remixes, and yet this is unquestionably at the top of my "desert island" stack. *Importantly, I am referring to the full, 7-song version, and not the cruel 6-track US version, which is like cutting off Sgt Pepper before "A Day in the Life". This album is a full-on ride from beginning to end. Yet no matter how calamitous or soothing the moment is, the brain is being tickled from every possible direction. Not a single moment is wasted, not a sound. And once you are familiar, it is next to impossible not to laugh out loud at the sonic magic tricks that only Cornelius could conjure. And make no mistake, this is a Cornelius album. With this work, he redefined what a remix could be. Nearly everything you hear is played by his hand. Often only the vocals are recognizable from the perfect selection of original artists, but utterly recontextualized in a dense and alien sonic landscape where anything goes. "Wait, was that Moog or a theremin, right after the frogs but before Bob Barker?" Others will tell you that you can skip CM if you have Fantasma. Indeed, much of the Fantasma experience is woven into CM, which was the point (no pun intended). But I guess that depends on your point of viewpoint (pun intended), because I would pick CM every day of the year.. and have for 20 years now with no regrets, appreciating it more each time. There is something special that happens when Cornelius runs away with the vocal track of another artist, and this collection is the pinnacle of that magic trick. My 2 cents: It demands your full attention, which will be effortless for anyone in earshot. Driving is best, headphones otherwise. Don't listen to the remixes, experience the album. If the chaos of the first track throws you off, hang in there.. because you'll never skip it once you view the big picture. And a bonus fun game: At any point, try to count the exact number of things going on.. You'll probably fail, but it may just induce spontaneous psychedelic bliss.. all the way until you hear the train whistle from heaven ;) 10/10
DrumDial Drum Tuner
03 July 2018
HAVE you tried this thing??
For 24 years I have played drums and for 24 years I have hated tuning them and never felt like I nailed it. This device is magical. It feels solid and like something you will have forever if you take care of it, so the cost is not much in drum dollars. It's a simple but game-changing invention which couldn't be easier to grasp after a quick look at the basic instructions. It made the beat-up heads on my cheap travel kit sound great beyond all expectation on the first go-round. I'll never tune a drum without it again. I can't fathom anyone being so naturally accurate at tuning by feel that this wouldn't be a must for their tool kit. This is all honest passion by the way, I received nothing for this review.
Behringer BOD400 Bass Overdrive Pedal
29 May 2019
Better & More Necessary Than Expected
This pedal exceeded all my expectations sonically, especially after reading many lukewarm reviews. This circuit not only flatters bass much better than regular overdrives, but it's also a great sounding overdrive. I really do believe the price, look, and material of the pedal affects people's perception of the sound quality. If this pedal looked cool and was made of metal, but sounded exactly the same, I think people would rave about it. That said, if you require your pedal to take abuse in a live setting, plastic is probably not the way to go. But if you are primarily concerned with the sound, on a budget, and take good care of your gear, you won't regret going with this pedal (or any of these plastic Behringer pedals, as far as I can tell so far).
