A history lesson of pop jazz
1 of 1 found this helpful Like an 80s mix tape of jazz hits from its inception until rock pushed it out, these cds bring forth some insight into jazz popularity based on Billboard charts of the day. The companion notes are a little skimpy but useful. Rare photos and sheet music covers more than compensate. The album style cover is a nice touch. The reproduction of the music itself is mostly excellent, dependent on the source material, of course, some of which are rarely heard nowadays. All told, a very good value.

Jam & Jive w/Cab & Company
An excellent, jumping compilation of some of the best of the early 30's recordings made by Cab Calloway for Victor especially covering his first Cotton Club period. This is the no-holds-barred Cab when it comes to scatting and a looser swing from the band coming out of the earlier Missourians. It has the added bonus of some of his sister Blanche's Victor sides which are just as interesting, especially since she came first in the family as an entertainer. Highly recommended. Combine it with any of the Decca/MCA reissues and you have the best of early Cab. (Originally issued on French RCA.)

A side of the Whiteman band rarely heard anymore.
Apparently, there are many nowadays who relegate the Whiteman band to a narrow view of the twenties and Box Beiderbecke only. This CD places the Whiteman band smack in the middle of the swing time 30's. With star performers like Jack Teagarden, his brother Charlie and the often underrated Miff Mole in the mix, who could go wrong? You won't if you get your hands on this CD and let your everlovin' jazz ears do the rest.
