Atago PAL Coffee Refractometer - Accurate and great value.
After calibration with distilled water, the Atago refractometer was accurate within .02% (tested with VST calibration solution), and matched the accuracy of our VST refractometer.
When following good sample measuring protocols (e.g. cooling samples before placing on the lens, and then waiting 1 minute to allow the liquid and lens temperature to equalise before reading the sample), the Atago is only a few seconds slower at processing a result, but it is as accurate as our VST refractometer.
The Atago is less than half the price of the VST, so it is significantly better value.
IMO, the only advantage with the VST refractometer is the ability to fully recalibrate if distilled water calibration does not correctly calibrate the device. However, I have owned an Atago PAL Coffee refractometer for over 3 years, and it is still as accurate as our VST refractometer, and distilled water recalibration continues to restore its accuracy.
