Captivating journey through McCall's adolesence and on.
Through Nathan McCall's eyes we see the pressures that he faced as a youth and the challenges to being poor and black. Some events in the book might be found disturbing, but each of them plays a role to really show what growing up was like in his neighborhood. For those of us who lived in a middle class house hold, or who were born white and have never been able to understand the discrimination that minorities face, McCall gives us a perspective to be more compassionate towards. It's important that we understand how somethings come about, rather than condemning a person for an act without considering their history.
I would recommend this book to anyone to read. It's fascinating, and easy to follow. I loved that the chapters are short so when I'm reading it I can stop when I need to. McCall's writing is fluid and I found myself lost in the book for hours on end.
