Another belter from Maggie O'Farrell.
A good read, albeit a sad one, with a historical background of dynastic marriages in Renaissance Italy, and the plight of the women whose only value lay in producing heirs. What happened to them if they didn't? Health warning - scenes of domestic abuse .

Original and compelling
Unusual, lots of surprises, funny in places, a thought provoking take on the human condition

In exploring what is known about Shakespeare, Bryson brings Elizabethan and Jacobean England to life, debunking the flights of fancy that litter the field of Shakespeare study along the way. Well researched but not an academic challenge, it's readable, short, and full of fascinating insights. Bryson's writing style is economical and peppered with his characteristic wit. Very enjoyable!
