Best available book on subject: good companion to Gerster'c "Churches in Rock".

Excellent review of Ethiopian sacred art from Axum to late Gondar period. Well-written & illustrated. Time for an extensive update down to the present time.

OK, but the English subtitling is dire.

A good, short film. It's heavily dependent on a prior appreciation of Japanese culture: the power of poetry, and the respect for spirituality, for instance - but no worse for that. What lets this version down is the dire subtitling, done by someone who had a poor grasp of English. At best it's adequate, at worst, incomprehensible, and occasionally comic. One gets the general gist, but I'm sure a lot of detail and information is simply lost. So yes, buy this film, but not this particular release.
