Penguin Books 789 The Rescue by Joseph Conrad 1950
18 June 2020
Beautifully written study of a group of misplaced characters.
Conrad was a master, a giant of literature, not the least because he was not a native English speaker. 'The Rescue' was one of his later works and is told with the full force of his writerly skills; it's not just a rollicking story of an eastern coast of the late 1800s but a full psychological study of his characters. Conrad always peopled his stories with characters based on people he met during his career as a seafarer and on finishing this book, you'll feel you've also rubbed shoulders with these individuals in a Bangkok backstreet. Of course, his most well-known work is 'Heart of Darkness' and, while it's a very worthy work, I feel it is a pity that most readers are not acquainted with his other, perhaps less familiar works. I can wholeheartedly recommend 'Victory' and the short story 'Typhoon' as good places to strart.

Nothing less than excellent!
Hirokazu Kore-eda's film is a deeply moving exploration of family. Excellent.
