Stunning psychological symbolic sci-fi from the writer of Penda's Fen
If David Rudkin's earlier - and better known - Penda's Fen (BBC, 1974) can be seen as a coming of age story, using motifs that have since come to be seen as folk horror, then Artemis 81 is a sort of Jungian mid-life crisis story, using sci-fi tropes (Dr Who, Quatermass, etc). It's absolutely mesmerising stuff, but does require patience and several viewings to get to grips with. But it's worth it - this is as good as Penda, and deserves a wider audience. The DVD is sadly not a restored print, so expect scratches, etc, on the print. The DVD is quite hard to get hold of at a reasonable price, so if you see one, grab it.
