Great lens for thousands less
I bought this lens used on e-Bay for use on my Sony VG-20 video and Sony NEX-7 still cameras. Both require the use of an adapter and I got the Sony LA-EA2. The adapter provides accurate phase-detection auto-focus and allows the use of the lens stabilization feature. Although i am sure a lens costing five times as much is better, I am very pleased with my results so far. I do mostly wildlife video when I can and this lens is great for that. I am pleased with the clarity and color of my results. Prior to this, my only AF and OS telephoto lens was the Sony 18-200 which is very nice but not powerful enough for a lot of wildlife. I previously used a Nikon 500mm reflex lens for distant wildlife but that was completely manual and often took too much time to find the subject, adjust the focus and still get the shot. Also, even with a tripod, I still had a lot of unwanted camera movement. The zoom on the Sigma helps me locate my subject faster, starting at 150 and moving to 500, and it gives me both AF and OS that work very well, though I often switch to manual focus if I have the time after getting some film on AF. This lens makes some noise that is picked up on the on-camera mic - a click each time the AF locks on and a faint high-frequency sound from the OS when it is turned on. Both are overcome with the use of an external mic which I mount to my tripod. While it is larger and heavier than my 500mm reflex, the results are so much better and I can also leave other lenses at home, taking only the Sigma and the Sony 18-200 into the field. Other more expensive telephotos in this range are also large and heavy, sometimes moreso. When possible, I carry the Sigma/camera mounted on my tripod in the field so setup is minimal. For me, this lens is a keeper.
