Not great writing, but diverting none the less.
1 of 3 found this helpful I recently purchased the Chronicles out of nostalgia for the first time I read this series in Junior High. I remembered that I enjoyed them quite a bit at that age, and wanted to see how they would weather in my estimation with the benefit of a couple of decades behind me. If you are looking for quality literature, let's just say that you should probably keep looking. If you are looking for an escapist diversion in the vein of the fantasy genre, then you may have found your mark. The books are full of action, and do manage to produce a few genuinely intriguing characters. It is clear that the books drew heavily from the Lord of the Rings series, sometimes so much so that they border on thievery. However, while the books make use of a similar compendium of races and creatures, they never approach the stately grandeur of the Lord of the Rings. Regardless, they are certainly well suited to capturing the imagination of the young adult audience to which they seem directed.
