Epson produces one of the best low cost home projectors yet
Where can I start with this? Well I have been using LCD projectors for over 5 years, my first was an Epson TW-600. When it came time to adopt newer technology and the promise of Higher definition rates I again looked at the Epson range. I wanted something that was not too expensive and not too difficult to setup. The older TW-600 took quite a bit of tweaking to get the picture just right and it suffered a little from a slightly lower lioght output. My family room has quite a lot of light coming into it and something brighter was desirable for daytime viewing. I researched all of the various models and looked at other brands as well, but the Epson I knew I could trust. The TW3600 or PowerLite 8350 (US name)was perfect. I purchased my first in 2011 and was immediately by its performance right out of the box. Using a 15 meter HDMI cable from my PVR with HD tuners, the picture was simply stunning. This was a good start. Running through all of the Color Mode ontye Epson Remote I had a near perfect picture for every situation. The contrasts are amazing with the 50,000:1 ratio compared to the old unit at 5000:1 contrast ratio. I have set up two of these units now and both have been sourced from the United States. The second unit on setup was a different experience with some discoloration in the picture. A greenish wave would run top to bottom across the picture and you could see a persons face changing color, however this was not the fault of the projector. There was a signalling error happening at the Amplifier end and after adjusting cables and reconfiguring some of the inputs it completely disappeared. The TW3600 is not an automatic style of projector and this may not appeal to everyone. The Focus and Picture size is done manually via the controls near the output lens, howver once set you don't need to worry. The Lens shift is also manual with the aid of two wheels positioned on the upper case of the projector. Most of the other adjustments are available via the remote. The best picture is obtained by using HDMI cables, next comes Component, then S-video and composite. The standard Foxtel can be dramatically improved using a component output SCART to component, setting the Foxtel box to YPB and the result is very acceptable as the Foxtel outputs are normally low def. Epson calim a life of 4000 hours on eco for the lamps but I find I am lucky to get more than 1600 Hours satisfactory viewing. These can be sourced fairly cheaply anyway. All in all the Epson is a low cost better performing than expected, has an amazing HD picture, is quiet, reliable, easy to setup and probably going to be harder to get as I believe that Epson are going to discontinue this in favour of the more expensive options. I hope they don't. Shawn - Melbourne, Australia
