Prophetic view by Han
This novel traces the childhood of the Author in China and the events that dominated her childhood and =events in her later life that saw the changes that took place in China from the original agrarian community to the rise of military involvement with the changing times that saw China becoming a pawn in world politics and the influences of the Western values and the ever changing communist growth that had started to develop in the 50s and continued to influence many other nations in the world and that included China , being so close to the Soviet Union and her complex and almost innocent involvement with the Communist movement that was sweeping the globe in the mid 50s and after.
Perhaps , Su Yin's Title - A Mortal Flower - should be read as The Mortal Power as that is the direction that this country Chung Kuo ( the Middle Kingdom) is heading and we see the growing threat and the silent and stealthy progress that this nation is making and Su Yin perhaps had a premonition that this would eventually take place and appropriately chose the title of "The Mortal Flower' for her novel - did she have the foresight of this happening ?
