A visually impressive mic with a great response curve for live performance
1 of 1 found this helpful I picked up a couple of these mics at a very good price on ebay. The classic version looks really nice and is rather weighty in your hand. I really like the textured paint on these mics too.
In use, they have reasonably low handling noise. But what's really nice is that the PL-80c is the first and only mic I have ever owned that needs absolutely no EQ for a live performance. I usually roll off some low end to compensate for close proximity and add some high end to cut through the mix. With this mic, I can leave the channel EQ completely flat and it's like I have dialled in my favourite EQ curve already.
The PL-80c does suffer from plosives a little more than some mics I have owned, but with proper technique, this is not really a problem. The mic has a nice tight polar pattern which results in good gain before feedback.
Great live performance mic - highly recommended.

The end of the large format analogue mixer
1 of 1 found this helpful I've been doing audio for more than 20 years now. Years of lugging large format mixers around are now a distant memory. There are so many advantages to a unit like the XR18. For a start, you don't need a snake. Also, with the built in EQ, gate and compressor on every channel and four FX busses with a myriad of digital FX, you don't need a huge FX rack either. Remember the days of rationing out the compressors and gates to those channels that REALLY needed them? No more, you have one for each channel. You also have multi-band fully parametric EQ on every channel, every bus! Performers can mix their own monitors from their smart phones! You can wonder around the venue with a tablet and get the mix perfect. The preamps in the XR18 are stellar too. Performers in my band keep telling me how much better everything is sounding. I didn't know how bad my old mixer sounded until I got this unit. The sound is super clean. Reliability on the XR18 is 100% after several gigs too. Given my experience with this unit, I will never go back to a large format desk for gigging.
