2010 : The Year We Make Contact (DVD 2000)
Close to scoring 'average', but then again it's still satisfying enough (at least in its conclusion to 2001) to warrant a 'good'. 2001 remains visually superior and the addition of dramatic synth music in 2010 sets this film clearly in the 80s, whereas the dramatic silences, classical pieces and mystical sounds of 2001 make the original a timeless piece of cinema. There's an all-too obvious attempt to recreate the gritty realism of 2001 (take the engineer's hyperventilation on his first spacewalk for example). This is lost on the audience, as the scene becomes more annoying than gripping. However, there is a faster pace to 2010 which breaks with the slower and arguably irritating plodding pace of 2001 to some degree. So, 2010 is ironically the film which comes across as more dated. However, if you felt cheated by the abstract ending of 2001, then you will be pleasantly rewarded by 2010's happy ending.
