This is most useful for outings and looking at rocks on geological outings. Inexpensive and of good quality.

A Compact Technical Book
While this book was published in 1979 the material is still relevant. It contains a lot of information, many useful color photographs and black and white diagrams. The book is based on the U.K. and I would have preferred an Australian edition. However, geology is geology and the principles apply anywhere. This book starts at the entry level and advances the geographical information in easy steps. Most useful.
