The Swimmer
In the affluent suburbs of America, Ned Merrill (Burt Lancaster) appears as the archetypal burn out victim of the "American dream". This film shows his journey up hill to his family home, using all swimming pools as check points along the way. In this we see a picture of a man through his own self perception and then those who know him. Beautiful cinematography, aligned with an excellent performance from Burt Lancaster underpinned by a stirring score, gives a film that stays with you long after it's finished. The advertisers were influenced many years later to re-create the swimming pool route planning for a jeans commercial.
