George Lynch 's Guitar Bible Japan LD Laserdisc 56P6-9035 Dokken CAV
02 January 2024
George Lynch in LASERDISC glory.
Simply stunning classic George Lynch. Please be aware that George Lynch is an ever expanding artist and composer of music for the guitar, the George Lynch here is not up to the same standard of the George Lynch of today but guess what? Some of us want George Lynch in every age and this classic 80's George does not fail to deliver. This release is available as a DVD for those who don't own a laserdisc player but my reason for purchasing laserdisc is that it gives me pristine VHS style viewing and brings me back to that time. Current media releases simply don't. Also I doubt you will get anywhere near as cool a cover for a video release. I mean Vinyl size covers can't be beaten period for physical media. Superb release to add to my George Lynch collection and anyone snobbing Laserdisc need to try doing a jog shuttle with the speed and accuracy of a laserdisc, you will quickly find it's not possible. Some classic tech is unbeatable and this is why I hope laserdisc will make a come back one day.

Steve Vai Flex-able: 36th Anniversary Edition (Vinyl) 12" Album (US IMPORT)
13 January 2024
Be FLEXIBLE and listen to this album, you will be enlightened and surprised.
Steve Vai Flexible is a legendary album by one of the greatest guitarists in the world. However it's so much more than just this accolade for me, because this is a record released at a time when the great Frank Zappa was alive and Steve was just starting out in recording. With the limited knowledge he had about the recording process and his Zappa musical influences he put together this incredible album which for me is one of those albums like Frank Zappa's Freak Out or Captain Beefhearts Trout Mask Replica. Here we have an album of glorious experimentation and musical diversity with a key concept of having fun and man must Steve Vai have had fun putting this album together. He recorded hundreds of samples and used so many analogue techniques(many of them new to him at the time) to put this album together. It's an album of fun and joy and Steve Vai made this album with the goal of putting out music he wanted to release which he's written from his high school days up to his time with Frank Zappa touring. It's purely a composer/artist exploring music and doing it for them, not to meet a specific audience or meet a commercial goal. It's like a musical journey filled with wonderful content that's not trying to be commercial or polished or reach a specific target audience etc, it's just pure Steve Vai creativity and the result is a fascinating album filled with contrast and colour which to me puts it among great albums like the ones mentioned by Frank Zappa and Captain Beefheart above. Now make no mistake, it doesn't hit the same level as those albums because it's not an album made with multiple musicians and dedicated recording engineers, however for what was Steve's first album ever and for pure creativity it shines like moonlight and gold. With Steve's later releases I sometimes find myself missing the creative fun dare I say it lunacy of Flexible but then the albums of now are expensive highly polished portraits of perfection, this album has that raw feeling in comparison which sadly is missing from so many album of today. Now the best aspect of this release is that it was ALL recorded using completely analogue tape technology. It featured splicing methods that Frank Zappa himself would do on a lot of his recordings in order to have the best recording he liked for each of the tracks. For Steve however, it's more about including a strange sound or adding an element for the music. Now of course you can do the same thing using digital methods but there all based on the tape methods of this classic recording method. Also as we all know, good quality analogue recordings sound amazing because our ears are analogue. So enter this vinyl release which comes from the original master tapes. Yep your getting that actual analogue recording(NOT A DIGITAL RECORDING placed onto a vinyl which is pointless.) placed onto the vinyl and as we all know that first pressing run is always the best, so do yourself a favour and grab it while you can because I believe it will be a limited edition run. I'm even thinking of grabbing a 2nd copy to have a backup and my standard playing vinyl. The recording pops out at you in a way that finally fixes the problem I've had with the CD version(the only way I could previously obtain this awesome album.), you will notice a very sharp difference and hear the album with a clarity previously unavailable unless you were lucky enough to obtain it when it was originally released. Steve Vai even released a re-release of the cassette tape version of the album(however while there are some nostalgic joys to be had here, I always found commercial cassette tapes could never replicate the sonic glory of Fostex original master tapes etc, whereas a vinyl seems to capture the audio far better for commercial playback gear. A lot of it has to do with the fact that without expensive cassette players, most budget/affordable cassette decks will add that lovely tape hiss etc, whereas a nice turntable setup is completely devoid of anything but what that actual master tape recording was like.) To conclude if your a Steve Vai fan, this is a no brainer MUST HAVE album and what an opportunity to have it in it's finest commercially released form. The cover is amazing and I personally feel enriched to have this version of the recording. The only way you could get better is to own those master tapes but that would cost you bucket loads of cash to afford the equipment to play them back and ultimately those master tapes will never be for sale. If your a casual fan, you will experience an album that's different from anything you have probably heard before and experience true analogue recording glory. GET IT NOW you will be surprised.
