NHL 94 Megadrive/ Genesis - a timeless great
This is still one of the best, if not the best, video game ice hockey simulations at the time of writing (January 2012). The one problem with this is that the violence was taken out by omitting blood from head injuries and the fights (that were present in the previous version). However, the fights could be a factor in breaking up gameplay in the 1993 game and their omission is seen by many as a plus for this reason. I have played the SNES version and feel that this MD version is better as the controls seem more fluid, as seems the gameplay. I have played in leagues with this over the years and once people start playing it can take over their lives if there is a competitive atmosphere present such as a league. There is a version of this in PS2 NHL 06 and it also can be played in 60Hz mode on PC by downloading an emulator via NHL.com. I have been playing on and off on this for about 15 years and its still great, even though many will mock the now basic graphics. The artificial intelligence of the teams remains second to none, as does a face to face battle when the selected teams balance individual abilities. Buy it and try it - you won't be disappointed.

Atari 2600 7800 A/V Composite Video Mod Kit NTSC/PAL - DIY

Atari 2600 Jr AV modification kit
This kit arrived from Turkey after a couple of weeks or so and contained a circuit board with pre installed wires, plus 2 phono plugs for video and audio (mono, the 2600 doesn't do stereo). The installation instructions were found via the coolretroprojects website. You will need a soldering iron etc and means of cleaning off molten solder from the areas where components need to be removed, plus a drill to make holes in the console case for the phono plugs. It's best to do some practice soldering and component removal on a circuit board to get used to the operations if you are new to it (as I was) - after that it's a case of having sufficient belief to open up the console and follow the instructions, which are pretty concise. I managed to put the phono plugs at the rear of the console rather than the side and although it was a tight fit it looked better in my opinion compared to the side position specified in the instructions. I fitted a 9mm blanking grommet over the hole left by the aerial lead to tidy things up. The AV mod worked well and the resulting screen through AV leads and an LCD TV was well defined, clear, and as good as can be expected given the age of the console. It was well worth it and has basically made the console readily playable again. Tuning the machine in to an analogue channel to play it is simply too much of a pain, and the resulting interference lines on the TV are now annoying. This mod is a significant improvement and also tidies up the look of the machine.
