It works for film and should last longer than the better scanning kodak.
The one I bought on ebay was damaged so I went to Amazon. This scanner is passable, but not great. I was using this for scanning 35mm film negative to electronic files. It does automatically convert the negative to positive, but the clarity is only so so. I had a Kodak 35mm scanner that took much better quality scans, but couldn't feed well and developed a hot pixel streak. This prompted me to purchase the 4490. The Epson is also slow. It takes about 20 seconds per frame and with rolls and rolls of film my project will take a while. I am planning on using this to scan my old film and find if there are any that I want professionally scanned. Film loading is easy, but I question if the flimsy plastic frames actually control the film well enough. This scanner will perform well enough to view your old pictures on a computer screen, but not well enough to enlarge for pictures. It will easily give you facebook, flickr or other blog sized pictures.
