THERM~A~REST NeoAir XLite MAX SV Air Mattress, L Large ~ NEW
21 April 2016
Best choice for me
For the past two seasons, I've been upgrading my backpacking setup from the heavy stuff I carried on a thru hike in 2000 to lightweight gear. One of those purchases was a new backpack. When I got it home, my old RidgeRest was too big to fit in the small webbing on the new pack. I love the new pack, so it was time for a new sleeping pad. As much as I love the RidgeRest (light weight, quick setup, etc.), I knew I had to put my next pad in the pack. I read reviews on a dozen sites comparing so many pads, my head spun. To pick a pad, I considered price, weight, size, and durability. I've been sleeping on a RidgeRest forever, so any air pad was going to be more comfortable to me. This pad had it all. I found a great deal online for the large pad (about $40 less than anywhere else I could find it). The large size gave my 6 foot tall, broad shouldered (I'm a guy) frame plenty of room (more than the large mummy shaped Xlite). So, I ate a few extra ounces on weight. But, I made up for this with my awesome light-weight new sleeping bag from Western Mountaineering. As for durability, I'm sure you can pop this thing if you're an idiot. I've used it for a few nights so far. One in a shelter and two in my tent. No problems at all. You are probably wondering about the speed valve. I recommend watching the videos. It takes some getting used to, and I always add some more air withe the mouth valve, but inflating is not an issue. It doesn't take long. Deflating and rolling it back up is a breeze as well. I've done it in the wind, and I quickly learned how to position my body on the pad to keep it from blowing around while I rolled it up. If I had a complaint, it would be that the speed valve will unroll unless I put the grey bottom on the outside of the roll, and I would think Therm-a-rest would benefit from notifying customers to try rolling it the other way if they are experiencing some unrolling of the speed valve. Five stars from me anyway. Still a fan. Time to go back into the woods. See you there.
