Nokia E72 Semi-Smart Phone
After having owned a Nokia E51 and E71, I thought I knew what I was getting into with the E72. After spending a couple of weeks with this phone, I find some things similar, but some things not so similar...to its detriment. I really loved my first two E series phones. They were snappy, had good feature, OS felt useful and solid, and VOIP worked out of the box with integrated SIP software. The E72 seems sluggish. When you press a button or go through the menus it is slow to respond. It seems more like a mobile phone from 10 years ago than a modern one. Nokia has dropped out of the box SIP support and replaced it with VOIP software from some provider. You can get the native SIP working again, but you have to create an account on the Nokia Developers Forum and download a software add-on to re-enable the SIP support in the OS. There is an Optical Navi key to scroll by moving your finger, but it works poorly. I turned it off right away. Webbrowsing is slow and scrolling is not smooth. I use Opera and it worked much better on the E51 and E71. On the E72, it is very sluggish and annoying. One last beef, is that it comes preinstalled with vlingo, which on my phone crashes instantly upon running. Unfortunately, it tries to run it everytime the phone is started up. It asks me to set it up and everytime it crashes after the first screen. It can't be uninstalled. I will have to do that everytime I boot my phone for eternity. On the good side, it is a solidly built phone. It has a normal mini-jack headphone plug and audio quality is improved over the previous E series phones. The keyboard and screen are great to use. The sound quality of the phone is excellent. Generally as a phone it's great. As a smart phone, Nokia has done something wrong with the software side and they should get their act together. The E51 and E71 were great phones. I don't know who the brain surgeon was who redid the OS and software side, but they should be looking for new work in another field. Overall, still a good phone, but not a perfect effort.
