Much like the older nikkor f1.4 from the 70s this new 50mm 1.4 is a bit soft wide open. It's just a characteristic of the lens and is only truly noticeable at close focusing distances.
Regardless I would absolutely recommend it. It's a great portrait lens on my D7200 and when you stop it down to f4 or 5.6 is tack sharp. It's fantastic for low light situations and gives you that extra reach allowing lower ISOs and more time handheld as the evening wears on. It's Nikon's fastest autofocus 50mm (I wish they would make a 1.2g someday soon). If you love smooth bokeh then you will be very satisfied with this lens.
