USA Trains R1840 G Maintenance of Way Kitchen Car (Gray)

Good car for an older era
Good little car, but outdated with a modern train layout, except as something sitting to the side.

    TINY!
I thought this book was larger than it was. Its only about six inches square. I thought it was the size of a small coffee table book, but using this one on a coffee table invites someone to mistakenly use it was a coaster! Pictures are good and so is the text, but some of the photos were obviously taken in locations away from the ships, so it might be more truthfully titles "Stars that have been on board."
The Southern Railway Dining Car Cookbook: A Historic Reference
    27 October 2017
    Not what you expect
Years ago, my family took the Southern Crescent from Washington D.C. to New Orleans. It was a great trip and the service and food were excellent. I remember my mother marveling at the dinner rolls and asking the steward where the railroad bought them. He replied that they were made from scratch on the train. When I saw this book I thought that it would be a great gift. It would surely be full of stories, photos and great recipes from the Southern. Not quite. This book looks like the author found an old manual from the railroad and repackaged it for his own personal gain. There are recipes, but many of them are like "open the can and cook until done," or "order this from the commissary." There are no photographs- at all, no stories, and even better- no index, so you find yourself leafing through this thing looking under general headings for the dishes you desire. I'll keep the book for the recipes, but as a historical reference it is sadly lacking.
