Spider Woman: A Story of Navajo Weavers and Chanters
    26 December 2020
Glad I didn't miss this one!
The author's descriptions are easy to follow along with as she provides the right amount of detail. Detailed descriptions directly related to the subject include interesting points that keep me reading on a consistent basis. I'm currently reading this on my work break, and it's easy to go through several paragraphs or even a chapter in 30 minutes. The author provides visual descriptions of where her temporary house was, along with the natural scenery as it changes with weather and time of day. This is one of the ways she adds a romantic vibe to this story. Character descriptions are concise and uncluttered, providing clarity to each individual's image in relation to her and her position as a guest-student. The traditional values of her hosts are explained in enough depth to gain an understanding of who is who and who each is to one another as a family and also as a society. This, one might say, has nothing to do with the act of weaving. I'm saying that when a person is training for a skill in any culture, these things matter because "no man is an island". This understanding enabled her to experience to hold meaning beyond what she likely had expected. This is NOT a cold classroom where keeping personally detached for the sake of learning is a rigid requirement, in fact, this atmosphere is the exact opposite and incorporates personal boundaries into the setting from the beginning of her arrival with respect for all. Regarding weaving lessons for readers, this isn't an instruction book yet there are particular things she writes about that I, as a hobby weaver, was able to relate to. So far in my reading, most of these parts have made me laugh a little because I know exactly what the issue is! Some have surprised me, and others have definitely taught me reasons certain things occur on my loom as well as ways to resolve them. When she states that the Navaho word for "teach" is "to show" she puts into words what she was shown. Being able to read her descriptions with the understanding that only the visual can grasp is beneficial when you have sat with a loom - considering the fact that you're looking at it. Due to her detailed descriptions I'm able to visualize everything on my own loom even though I'm reading this book at a table in the break room where I work. There are pictures of the people and other things when she was there, deepening my appreciation of the book's source. I can see that her inspiration originated from a place within herself that connected to the place and the people which were her surroundings, giving insight into the author's incorporation of the culturally personal practices she learned about shortly after arriving. I'm only on Chapter 5 so there's not much more to add to this review, except this... I'm glad this book was recommended to me and if I'd missed out on reading it I'd have missed out on a very good thing. To the person who sent me in this direction, "Thank You very much". -Mya

    You get ONE nail
You do not get a box of nails, you get one nail. I luv this little nail, it's absolutely perfect. I was expecting a box of them which I wouldn't have known what to do with anyway,
