Lassie's Birthday Surprise
2 of 2 found this helpful This DVD contains 3 episodes of Lassie, all based on a birthday theme. I bought it to share with my grandkids (and my collie). They give you a good flavor of what it was like to grow up on a small family farm before TV or video games. They teach values of friendship, caring for others, family relationships, and love of animals. I think all kids should see the Lassie films and TV shows, preferably with their parents close by to add commentaries on the life lessons shown.

Lassie - The Painted HIlls VHS
This is a movie about a gold miner, his collie dog and his friends and enemies. It has good guys and bad guys. People get "gold fever" and become greedy and paranoid. Lassie is shown at her most agressive in this film as she powerfully attacks the "bad guy" to defend her owner. It is a moving film, and the scenery is beautiful.
The 9 year old girl I watched this movie with had no idea of gold mining, filing land claims, claim jumping, or the value of precious metals. In that regard it was highly educational. It's a good discussion opener for kids old enough to begin to understand about greed, bad people, loyalty, life and death.
