An insightful coming of age film.
1 of 1 found this helpful While many descriptions of this movie will make it out to be some sexual discovery/awakening between the two main characters, the movie is based upon a great deal more than that; that particular issue hardly, if ever, comes up at all. The two main characters, Bo and Kim, meet out of happenstance and develop a close relationship that develops into "something more." They are held up in a Dutch all boys school, set in the 70's, where they go instead of public school. Controversy is sparked when one of their classmates is reprimanded and then expelled as to make an example of him for displaying explicit photos of women in his room and then in the bathroom. Feeling that the administration has wronged their fellow classmate, the entire school decides to rise up against their dictator-like headmaster. This film is provocative, insightful, and challenging. There is what some refer to as "incidental" nudity in the film. This is where the "sexual awakening" starts to be put into play. If you can't look past the "incidental" nudity along with the few scenes that if you stretched them to their utmost capacity could be considered homo-erotic, then I think you would be better suited with another film. This cutting-edge movie for the time displays attributes admirable of any age by all the boys in the everyday life of the school. I would more than recommend this movie for anyone. Just be sure that you're mature enough to watch the movie with an open mind. There are some scenes that may catch you unawares, but the movie more than makes up for that in the wonderful portrayal of the deep and loving friendship of Bo and Kim.
