Gettysburg
1 of 1 found this helpful As a retired U.S. Army Colonel and amateur military historian, I felt this movie was an excellent portrayal of one of the most tragic and defining moments in American history.
Jeff Daniels did a stellar job portraying Lt. Colonel Joshua Chamberlain the Regimental Commander of the 20th Maine. A former college professor, Chamberlain's actions at Gettysburg is one of the best 'lead by example' stories in U.S. military history. A story that is discussed at the U.S. Army War college to this day. Against all odds he and his men saved the exposed right flank of little round top which was the Achilles Heel of the Union battle position. When his unit ran out of ammunition he quickly rallied his troops to conduct a cleaver pivot maneuver followed by a bayonet charge that surprised and broke the Confederate line. Had the men from Maine retreated when they ran out of ammunition or had not trusted Chamberlain's steadfast example, the battle could have had a much different outcome.
Not only is the battle scene accurate it was filmed very close to the spot in which the fight actually occured. Robert Duval portrayed Robert E Lee who was took personal responsibility for the Confederate defeat and enormous loss of life. In just a few short days in July of 1863, both sides lost over 50,000 soldiers, 90% of what the U.S. military lost in the 10 years of the Vietnam War.
The movie also showed how hard it was for the senior leaders to fight former comrades from pre-war military service. Many of the Colonels and Generals had been Lieutenants or Captains who served together in the Mexican War or Modoc Indian Wars in California. Although they were all mortal enemies in this war, they had fond memories of their service together as soldiers always do and deeply regreted having to be on opposing sides in this conflict.
This is a very moving movie and a story that all students of American History should see. Soldiers on both sides made a tremendous sacrifice and showed what quality leadership can do when faced with a very difficult and costly mission.

Aiming point too low and won’t adjust to correct
0 of 2 found this helpful Great idea, poor execution. Aiming point set too low and won’t adjust further making it unusable. Made of flimsy plastic. My guess is this isn’t new but refurbished and the issue causing a return wasn’t fixed.
