Perfect for my needs!
Actually, the shaft on these short cables appears to be a very slightly flexible plastic... perhaps vinyl? Doesn't matter. It's not a strictly "rigid" plastic, so I don't foresee them breaking. It is true that the head on the locking knob/screws is a bit wide... but that makes them easier to tighten. Mine are chromed metal, and the knobs are 11mm in diameter... and when tightened onto the slo-mo shaft, they protrude 5mm above the cable's sleeve. As such, in order to use one of these on the DEC axis of my Orion SkyView Pro EQ mount, I may have to very slightly enlarge the opening in the mount's protective plastic DEC housing with my Dremel. Easy enough to do, of course... but a trip to my local hardware store will come first, to see what else might be available. I did try swapping the locking screw from a much longer Agena Astro slo-mo cable... but that screw's threads are 2mm longer than the threads on these, causing the top of its narrower knob to hit the edge of the mount's solid aluminum RA housing, and thereby rendering the cable useless. In spite of the need for a bit of DIY adaptation, however... I do very much like the length of these. And I honestly don't see the size of the locking screws to be an inherent deficiency, since there such a large variety of mounts to which these can be added... and every one of those mounts is configured completely differently. For the price, I find them to be perfect for my needs.

Perfect replacement ring for older cranksets
I ordered this 50T chainring and its 38T version as replacements for the 46T & 36T rings on my 30-year-old hand-made custom Ibis mountain-bike. Back when I ordered that bike, I had a second set of higher-geared 26" wheels made (Dura-Ace road hubs, 11-28 rear cogs, and 26x1.25 "Fat Boy" slick road tires), so I could occasionally ride with my "roadie" friends. Needless to say, if they were riding all-out, I could never quite keep up with them on the downhills or flats... but as long as the pace wasn't full-bore, I did fairly well. I'm now 72, and still ride almost exclusively off-road... but I have a new group of roadie friends who want me to ride with them. One test ride with them showed that the above conditions hadn't changed. The problem is, I LOVE my Ibis. To me, it's a timeless classic... and replacing its original top-of-the-line Specialized 3-ring touring crankset (26-36-46) and its original first-generation Deore XT 6-speed derailleurs and click-shifters would be a sacrilege... not to mention, a pain in the butt. When it occurred to me that I could "simply" swap the outer and middle rings to a 50-38 combo, my main concern was that because modern 9-speed-and-higher rear hubs utilize a narrower chain, a set of new, modern chainrings might not be as thick as my originals, and that this would then allow the "wider" Dura-Ace chain to "wobble"... causing excessive lateral play, and subsequent premature wear on both the chain and the chainring. Specialized no longer makes these rings, and was no help whatsoever in my attempt at tracking down replacements. Looking on the Sugino website got me nowhere, and no supplier or dealer whom I contacted was able to provide a measurement of the thickness of these rings. Ultimately, I decided to take a chance... and I can now report that the cogs on these Sugino rings are exactly the same thickness as the cogs on the original Specialized rings -- 2mm. The overall thickness of both the original and the Sugino rings varies, as you progress from the bolt-circle thickness to the thickness at the actual cogs... and it turns out that the Suginos are thicker at the bolt-circle than the Specialized ones, which means that they're STRONGER than the originals. PERFECT.
