Audio chiller
A friend who also enjoys audio books summed up the pleasure. "I love being read to," he said. Yes, the enjoyment is rooted in childhood, laying in bed and listening to a parent reading from a story-book. I like reading - deliberately not had a TV set for years. Audio tapes add to the mental library and can be played, for example, when (man alone) I am ironing, engaged in DIY and other jobs. An audio tape is also a good "timer".
eBay, as in other spheres, is a wonderful source for these tapes or discs. I have a very large collection - another pack arrived today via eBay.
I have nearly all the James Herbert audio books. I was especially pleased with this one because, usually very expensive, I bought for a reasonable price. Fourteen CDs! Herbert is in the forefront of thriller writers, specialising in the strange and paranormal. This is one of his best tales. The Secret of Crickley Hall was adapted for television (I saw the CD on my PC) but although well produced, as usual with film adaptations the plot was tinkered with. The film makers may have thought the full horror would be too much for viewers. The story is cleverly constructed - the tension mounting chapter by chapter. Actor David Rintoul does a superb job of reading the story. He played Mr. Darcy in a BBC 1980 TV version of Pride and Prejudice. Nothing horrific about that!
