Get a new U87 Ai
4 of 4 found this helpful The Neumann U87 Ai is a --great-- mic for vocals in my studio. I laugh when I read the slams of this mic compared to older U87's "pre-Ai version". Really? Buying used older gear, especially mics, is a crap shoot most of the time, and sending a used U87 in to a non-Neumann tech who will try to recover its original sound is way too much trouble. Old electronics do sound different than new, but give me a new high quality Neumann anytime. I'll do the aging.

New U87Ai is a great mic
Great sounding mic. We use the U87Ai in our studio primarily for female vocals, but the mic is good on anything, really. Old U87's seem more preferred but I wouldn't hesitate buying another U87Ai. Newer models like these are great, too, and I'm glad I didn't buy into the "stuff from the good old days is better" opinions as these Neumann mics are very consistent and are individually tested.
